Most small nail/screw punctures in the tread can be professionally repaired. Damage in the shoulder or sidewall is not repairable and needs a new tyre.
Repairable: central tread area
- Tyre is removed and inspected inside.
- Proper repair uses a plug + patch combination from the inside (not an external plug only).
Not repairable: shoulder / sidewall
The sidewall flexes heavily and repairs here can’t restore structural strength. Shoulders are also off-limits for safe repairs.
When to replace even if in the tread
- Large/irregular injuries, exposed cords, or internal damage.
- Low remaining tread (< 1.6 mm) or aged/compromised tyres.
FAQs
Is it OK to keep driving on a flat?
No — running flat can destroy the inner liner and make a repair unsafe.
Are aerosol inflators a permanent fix?
No — they’re a temporary get-you-home solution. Have the tyre inspected and repaired correctly.
